Breaking away from the field in the first half mile, and widening the gap the rest of the way, six-time Patch Sprint champion Jason Fiegl (Reber, NY) continued his mastery of the course by capturing the inaugural BARASU Adventure Race, held October 11, in Willsboro, NY.
Fiegl, 40 and claiming he may be in his best ever racing shape, looked relaxed the entire way, as evidenced by the photo (left) taken roughly six miles into the 11-mile race up three mountains. I feel like I'm having a good year," understated Fiegl, who earlier this summer completed both a 32-mile race (Top-10 finish), along with a 50-mile race (Top-20). His winning BARASU time of 1:42:10 was a testament to both his high mileage training, and ideal race conditions (cloudy, in the mid 50's).
Veteran skier, shooter, runner and cyclist Tom Moffett finished in 2nd place, with a time of 2:00:48. "... bummed to not break two hours, but now I have a simple goal to shoot for next year." Adirondack 46ers Jim Kobak, Brian DeGroat and John Rayburn all bettered two and one-half hours while finishing in the Top-5.

Cara Gentry (Kingston, NY) captured the women's division, despite still recovering from Lyme's disease. To add insult to illness, Gentry also made a wrong turn coming down Bare. "I've done the Patch Sprint several times, but the course change had me a bit confused!"
BARASU runs a modified Patch Sprint course, with turnarounds at the bare spot on Bare Mountain; the first Champlain lookout of Rattlesnake; and the summit of Sugarloaf. While it is still a hefty offering at 11 miles, and 2250 feet in elevation gained, the first time competitors were satisfied. "The best part," said the Champion, "was standing on top of Sugarloaf and knowing it's all downhill. You don't have to climb up Pok-O!"
The racers, volunteers and spectators at the debut BARASU event pitched in to raise $435 dollars for the Adirondack Scholarship Foundation. The pledge will be used to assist a local (Willsboro, NY) child attend summer camp in 2015.
